Expatriate Health Travel Insurance Plans For US Citizens

By: Donald Saunders

Expatriate health insurance is something that you should look at closely before you move overseas. There are a large number of individuals who travel overseas each year on holiday and find that they fall in love with their holiday destination. This occurs all the time and you have to remember that your requirement for health insurance coverage will remain unchanged regardless of where in the world you are.

You will still face all the same medical risks overseas which you face at home but you might well meet some very different issues when it comes to the cost of your own healthcare and that of your family. One of the things which you assuredly do not wish to experience is being caught up in limbo.

Let us assume for instance that you are working abroad and that while driving to work you are involved in a motor accident and suffer some minor injuries. The local police take you to the local hospital for treatment and, after the doctor has finished attending to your injuries, you are presented with a bill. Exactly how do you plan to pay?

Assuming that you are living abroad but continue to retain your US citizenship then it is unlikely that be eligible for free treatment even in a country with a system of free healthcare. You might naturally look to your health insurance from back home but, unless you have only been away from home for a relatively short period of time and are able to claim this expense as vacation cover, it is unlikely that your insurance company will meet your claim. At the end of the day you will have no choice but to to pay for your treatment yourself and merely hope that you have got enough money.

The sensible thing to do is to think about obtaining health insurance cover that is specifically designed for expatriates like yourself prior to heading off abroad. There are many health insurance programs available to cover nearly every situation you can think of and that will provide you with a great deal of peace of mind.

If you are going overseas to work for a company which is based in the US then they might well have a health insurance plan available to cover you and your family as long as you are working overseas. This is obviously something which you will wish to investigate as nearly all employers will cover some or all of the healthcare and medical costs of their employees working abroad.

If your employer does not provide the medical cover that you need, or the question of provision by an employer is not relevant, then you can search the Internet for expatriate health insurance cover and you will find a wealth of information from several companies and brokers who are more than happy to help in getting you a suitable expat medical insurance policy.

Should you decide to buy expatriate health insurance online however you must read through the small print of any policy carefully and satisfy yourself that you know just what is covered and what is not. You definitely do not want to get to your destination and find when you make your first claim that the policy you have purchased does not cover you for your claim or that it is not valid in your chosen country.

Finally, make sure that you begin searching for an expat medical insurance policy as soon as you know when and where you are going to ensure you get the best possible deal.
