People Going Through Over Weight Disorders Are More Likely To Fall Into Depression

By: Dustin Bond

The investigation affirms that the disorders related with anxiety, depression and the obsessive dysfunctions are way more often (by a 25%) among the obese ones that among athletic and thin people.

It has been discovered that one of the main causes of obesity is not the food you eat, or the lack of exercises or the inactivity a person may have, It is more related to Mental Health issues. A lot it has been debated about the obesity like a cause or a result of mental diverse problems. It is true that the investigation does not cover this matter directly, but diverse theories endorse the two visions: on one hand it is known that in many occasions the antidepressants medications provoke an increase of weight that sinks the one caused by the sedentarism associated to the depression. On the other hand, it is certain that in the current society the excess of pounds can end up transforming into a terrible stigma: the fats are minimized and transformed into jeer objects in many television programs, and in the real life.

Stereo Types

Wayne Fenton, of the National Institute of Mental Medicine of USA, suggests, in declarations to the newspaper USA Today that "the jovial cultural stereotype of the obese one is more a product of our imagination than a reality." A third of the American adults are obese and the depression affects to nearly 21 millions of citizens of that country, what is equal approximately to the population's tenth part.

The linking between obesity and depression has been studied for some time in the field of medicine, but up to now the investigations had failed when finding the nexus of union. It seems that this study is able to overcome this issue, or at least that’s what Susan McElroy, teacher of the University of Cincinnati (Ohio) believes that it confirms a relationship among the two elements.

To carry out the study, the team commanded by Gregory Simon, investigator of Group Health Cooperative of Seattle (Washington), carried out a national survey among 9.125 adults whose mental state was evaluated through diverse interviews. The level of obesity was determined using the data provided by the own participants.

The results show a devastating statistic: 25% of those interviewed turned out to be obese and of this fourth part, 22% declared to have suffered some personality dysfunction, including depression. That percentage descended in the case of non obese people until 18%. As not everything it can be negative, the study also reflected, according to McElroy that the abuse of the alcohol or of other substances it is less common among the obese ones.
